HERO CENTRAL: Food For Others Saves Families from Hunger

FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA9)--- "I get to go home and make something to eat for you know my little ones," said Lamar Edmonds on his first trip to Food for Others. The non-profit organization distributes free food from its warehouse. Edmonds gets bread, a package of food along with milk and eggs. The items are a part of the Emergency Assistance Program.

Northern Virginia has about 90,000 people living in poverty. The number represents about 5 percent of the population in the area, according to the U.S. Census.

Police: 3 Women Arrested For Fight At 7-Eleven

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- D.C. Police have arrested three women after an altercation at a 7-Eleven.

At around 2:23 a.m. on Sunday, two groups of women, one group of four and another group of three, got into some sort of altercation at the 7-Eleven in the 1100 block of U Street NW, police said.

The argument moved outside where one of the groups used a knife and a shoe to attack the other women, police said.

One woman was transported with lacerations and another woman was treated at the scene, police said.

DC AG Files Lawsuits Against 2 Organizations

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The DC Attorney General filed two civil law suits against "Peaceoholics, Inc." and "WEALTHY" for misusing federal grants.

A lawsuit reveals that Peaceoholics submitted a false grant application and used the money for two luxury SUVs for CEO Jauhar Abraham, officials said in a news release. 

The lawsuit also claims that Peaceoholics falsely reported the amount they paid Jauhar and former COO Ronald Moten. 

A lawsuit reveals that WEALTHY, (Washington East of the River Academy of Entrepreneurship, Arts, Life Skills, Technology and Health for "Youth on the Rise"), also falsely reported how funds were spent, officials said.

Police: One Man Stabbed In Northwest DC

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Police say a man was stabbed in Northwest D.C. on Friday night.

The suspect is described as a black male, 6 feet 2 inches, with white hair, police said.

It happened at 14th Street and Parkwood Place. The victim was conscious and breathing, police said.

Police say they are searching for one suspect.

The investigation is ongoing. More information will be made available as it comes.

Power Companies Gearing Up for Thursday Storms

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA9) -- Myra Oppel was sitting in her office at Pepco's Headquarters when the Derecho of 2012 hit. 

She watched as the power company's outages jumped from a few thousand to almost half a million. By the time it was all over, more than two-million people in Virginia, Maryland, and the District were in the dark, and it would take nearly two weeks before all the power was restored.

Almost a year later, Oppel met with WUSA9 to discuss what Pepco's doing to prepare for this latest round of storms.
