Bring the World Home – Host an Up with People Cast Member

Chelsey Panchot of the non-profit organization Up with People sent us this notice about a unique opportunity for DC residents:

Up with People is a six-month global education organization that takes 70-100 students between 17-29 years old from about 20 different counties on a tour around the world. The purpose is to learn, experience and connect with the communities we visit. We do this by taking part in various community service projects, staying in local host families and performing in an international dynamic show.

Families in Washington, D.C. will have the unique opportunity to bring a bit of the world into their own homes between October 14 – 25, 2010 when the international cast of Up with People arrives in Washington, D.C., a stop on their 2010 world tour.

Host families are being sought to keep one or more students from Cast B 2010, the 90-member Up with People cast and staff which represents 20 countries and more than 15 states.  “It is a great opportunity to experience other cultures while sharing your own,” explained Eduardo Ramirez.

The opportunity to stay with local families during their time in each community is a centerpiece of Up with People’s 22-week program.  The giving goes both ways…while families share their traditions and local attractions; the cast members share their experiences and cultures.

Local host families are asked to provide a bed, local transportation at the beginning and end of each day, as well as breakfast and most dinners.  While gone during the day, participating in regional learning, community service and show preparation, most evenings cast members will be home with the family to participate in their activities and interests.

In addition to many wonderful experiences with their new “son” or “daughter,” each host family will receive two complimentary tickets to the Up with People Show which will be held at Columbia Heights Educational Campus on Friday, October 22, 2010 and Saturday, October 23 at 7:30 pm.

“I can honestly say that the dozens of families who have opened their homes to me during my time with Up with People is one of the most meaningful and memorable experiences I have had,” said Eduardo Ramirez. I still stay in contact with many of them and I believe they will remain lifelong friends,” he added.

Those with smaller children or young teens in their home often find that the Up with People cast members are wonderful role models and provide a glimpse into other countries, cultures and traditions they might not often experience in Washington, D.C., Ramirez added.

Local families in the Washington, D.C. area are being sought to host the cast members between October 14, 2010 and October 25, 2010. Those interested in hosting are encouraged to contact Eduardo Ramirez on the Washington, D.C. Advance Team at eramirez@upwithpeople.org or by calling 303.330.7433.
