With the 10th anniversary of Aidan Design this month, its owners Nadia Subaran and John Schmiedigen wanted to do something special for the community that has supported them the last decade. Aidan Design, a custom kitchen firm in Bethesda, Md., decided to donate a Day of Service by designing and installing a kitchenette, handwashing station and art center at Martha's Table, a Northwest DC charitable organization that provides food and education to the area's homeless.

THE BIG REVEAL: 1 Volunteer + 19,000 Hours = 1 Extreme Exterior Makeover

THE BIG REVEAL: 1 Volunteer + 19,000 Hours = 1 Extreme Exterior Makeover

Gary Gaal, winner of the Extreme Exterior Makeover from Case Design/Remodeling and Ply Gem, continues to inspire with his community service.

A recurring question during the exterior makeover of Gary Gaal's home was: "How does someone volunteer so many hours?" For Gaal, it's easy. "I see people on the worst day of their lives and try to make it better." Gaal works every hurricane, flood and snowstorm and manages the scene at auto accidents and any other disaster that may occur. He is dedicated to helping others and is extremely proud of becoming a Fire Unit Officer which puts him in charge as an Fire Engine OIC and in command of the fire ground as a first arriving engine officer. One example: when an 11-year-old boy was thrown 30 feet off his bike after being struck by a car, Gaal was the first to arrive, controlled the scene and administered life saving techniques until the medics arrived. The victim survived.

Alexandria's McKinley Marketing Partners Donates Office Supplies to At-Risk Pre-Schoolers

McKinley Marketing Partners, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia with offices in Dallas, Texas and the New York Metro area, recently embarked on a new era of operation by rebranding with a fresh logo and an updated, user-friendly website. The new circular design of its logo underscores McKinley’s mission – to provide complete, well-rounded marketing solutions for its clients’ interim or direct-hire needs.

By rebranding, McKinley is moving forward with new ways to assist its diverse Fortune 1000 clientele and to recruit new marketing talent. McKinley also wants to remain a vital community leader in Old Town Alexandria, with office headquarters in a remodeled warehouse that originally operated as an arms dealership. Since the rebranding, McKinley had found itself with reams of logo paper products and other office supplies it can no longer use due to the introduction of its new round logo.

How Social Media Impacts Job Seekers and Employers.

Job seekers face not only the challenge of sluggish hiring but potentially also a murky background that may not pass a social media background check. Several years ago we were debating privacy issues with respect to email and instant messaging on the job. Today, we are talking about the use of social media to screen potential employees. Whether accurate or inaccurate, a picture is painted of potential employees. If you are looking for a job and have a clean background, you still may have concerns. You may be concerned about the impact of potential untruths, private details that may be located on the internet, or comments posted to "friends" that may be taken out of context by a potential recruiter. Or if the so-called discovered information has been correctly attributed to you.  How uncommon is it for someone to have the same name?
