DC Students Improve Math Performance on NAEP

Fourth- and eighth-grade students in the District of Columbia have demonstrated improved performance in math on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) for the sixth consecutive time.  

In 2011, the District of Columbia was one of only four states to show improvement in both fourth- and eighth-grade math.

“I am proud of the gains made by our DC Public School and public charter school students in math on the NAEP,” said DC Council Chairman Kwame R. Brown. “I offer my congratulations to the students and the staff who have supported them.”  

Also known as “The Nation’s Report Card,” the NAEP measures students’ knowledge and skills in mathematics and reading across the United States and is administered every two years.

Results for the District of Columbia, like all states, are reported as averages and include both DC Public Schools and public charter school students.   Average math scores in the District increased by three points for fourth graders (from 219 to 222) and six points for eighth graders (from 254 to 260), but they are still below the national averages of 240 and 283.

There were no significant gains in reading for either grade, and scores remain significantly below the national average:  The average fourth-grade NAEP score for District students is 201, compared to a national average of 220 and the eighth-grade score is 242, 22 points below the national average of 264.

“We should celebrate the gains made by our students, but continue to move forward aggressively with improving all of our schools," Brown remarked.  "Although the math increases are positive news, the fact that our fourth- and eighth-graders made no significant progress on reading on the NAEP indicates that we need to do a great deal more so that all of our students are achieving at high levels.”
